Vanessa Arambula

Teacher, YMCA East Bay

Vanessa Arambula, a proud Chicana hailing from a lineage deeply rooted in Coahuiltecan heritage, carries a profound connection to the agricultural legacy of the Americas. As an Anthropologist and holder of an Early Childhood Education Certificate, Vanessa skillfully weaves together her expertise to reconstruct Mesoamerican mythology into captivating children’s stories. Her life's mission revolves around preserving the rich heritage often overlooked in mainstream curriculums.

Vanessa’s dedication lies in educating children about their cultural legacy, empowering them to embrace their identity before the imposition of colonial narratives in classrooms. She fervently works to counteract the distortions caused by the colonizers' gaze, enabling youth to authentically define their own narratives. Amidst nurturing her garden, witnessing the ever-changing seasons alongside her two young boys, Vanessa finds solace in caring for their tree ancestors, grounding herself in the wisdom of the earth.

Drawing strength from celestial realms, Vanessa gazes at the stars for healing and guidance. In the realm of astrology, she embodies the resilience of a Ram, the diligence of an Ox in the Chinese zodiac, and the tenacity of a Jaguar in the Mayan calendar. These cosmic influences shape her character, instilling within her a curious nature, unyielding perseverance, and an indomitable spirit. Vanessa's holistic approach, blending heritage, education, and spirituality, underscores her commitment to nurturing cultural pride and self-discovery among the youth.
